It was way too long. Didn’t have time to read over. Very annoyed. Stuffed up and worked really hard for it
amy | Nov 8, 2011 | Reply
I was a bit annoyed that there was nothing on promoting healthy eating or pretty much anything from area of study 3….nothing on the government’s role in health care or anything! Had no idea what advocate, enable and mediate was or the exact definition of health promotion but the rest of the exam was okay. There was too much focus on education on human development as well…i talked about the same stuff for the question on women and the other extended one
(
kep | Nov 8, 2011 | Reply
how repetitive was it! very disappointed that there was so little on unit 3
the hardest questions were definitely the Ottawa charter and the MDG 8.
other than that i was fairly happy
molly | Nov 8, 2011 | Reply
yeah, way to much on education! i repeated myself heaps… and there was NOTHING on healthy eating, programs, NRVS, surveys, FSANZ, government responsibility, Medicare etc…
Azz | Nov 8, 2011 | Reply
Shouldnt have dropped below 75/100. The MDG was by far the worst they could have picked, Ottawa charter was a joke! And I seemed to have mentioned collective goods and services at least 4 times separately. Up yours Health and HD!
Can anyone tell me what Study Score I would generally get with a Unit 3 A, a Unit 4 B and an exam B?
Monkey | Nov 8, 2011 | Reply
Azz – are you saying an A+ is 75/100?
rosie | Nov 8, 2011 | Reply
I agree with Amy it was an annoying exam, so much was left out but some questions repeated the same information like the two about education or the two about values that underpin the Australian Health System. Uh… it should have been so much more straight forward!
Monkey | Nov 8, 2011 | Reply
Azz – are you saying an A+ is above 75?
rosie | Nov 8, 2011 | Reply
It was really really repetitive and didn’t cover half the stuff we studied. That Ottawa Charter stuff was horrible! Does anyone know how they define health promotion?
Georgie | Nov 8, 2011 | Reply
Azz- I had a friend get A+, A, A+ which resulted in a study score of 40.
ella | Nov 8, 2011 | Reply
I was surprised at how little it examined – I was stressing about all the promoting healthy eating stuff (NRV’S, AGHE, FSANZ) because I never really got a hang of it but there wasn’t even one question on it!
so that was annoying.. and the MDG8 page was ridiculous I couldn’t remember anything so just made it all up.
And typically the one issue I didn’t remember a program for was for malaria
From all the people I’ve talked to so far (even from other schools) no-one knew what to do for the Ottawa mediate, advocacy and enable question… did anyone actually know about it? I don’t think my textbook even has it in there.
Generally though, a really long exam and was pretty disappointing. Marking was tough too, got a bit confused at what points to put in some 4+ mark questions.
From getting a 95% average in all sacs, definitely think I’ll be lucky to even get a 40 now..
poppy | Nov 8, 2011 | Reply
if you get all As in your sacs what do you need to get in the exam to get over 40????
ella | Nov 8, 2011 | Reply
poppy – I’ve heard you can only get a 40 if you get an A+ in the exam. No-one really knows what an A+ is because it depends on the year and what the average marks are
kep | Nov 8, 2011 | Reply
i reckon the a+ mark will be lower this year considering that the exam was much more difficult then other years! dont worry everyone will do better than they expect!
S | Nov 8, 2011 | Reply
Yeahh I found the exam long too, I actually panicked a lot during the exam thinking I wouldnt get it done however it was alright in the end with 15 minutes to spare
The MDG 8 was okay… however I didnt really study it
the rest was pretty good, I really liked how they let us choose a nutrient
CALCIUM for sure but they were all good choices
and the only problem was the mediate, enable, advocate from the Ottawa Charter :\ that screwed me up.
definitions were good
DDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
everything was
exept that stupid ottawa charter question damn damn!!!!
Puffle | Nov 8, 2011 | Reply
Do you guys reckon they will give one mark (out of 2) if we mentioned something along the lines of “allows individuals to take control over their own health” but didn’t write it word-to-word definition from book of Ottawa’s “Health Promotion”??
and what do you guys think the A+ cut off will be? last years was like you could get 26.5 wrong for an A+, think it’ll be lower this year? =/
J | Nov 8, 2011 | Reply
I found it really good! except that whole MDG8 and Ottawa charter stuff. That advocate, mediate and enable, isn’t in my text book. Surely thats not fair????? Im so glad there wasn’t anything about healthy eating!!!!
Gracious | Nov 8, 2011 | Reply
There was heaps of time! I rushed through just in case but ended up with plenty of time to stress about the silly MDG 8 and Ottawa Charter health promotion questions. I thought it was quite easy other than that.
What do you need for an A+?
Grace | Nov 8, 2011 | Reply
I thought it was pretty long and i had no idea how to answer the question on how the Ottawa charter defines health promotion and the advocacy, mediation question. Other than those two questions i felt pretty good.
liz | Nov 8, 2011 | Reply
OH WOOOOOW! That last Ottawa question was a shock. Overall the exam was long- 20 pages, when compared to previous years- 14-17 pages. Look, if everyone found the Ottawa question hard, then that’s fine. If it was just YOU then you should be worried :/
Health Guru | Nov 8, 2011 | Reply
The ottowa question was fine, it was in the textbook
Advocate: Health is a resource for social and developmental means, the dimensions that affect these factors must be changed to encourage health.
Enable: Health equity must be reached where individuals must become empowered to control the determinants that affect their health,
Mediate: Health promotion cannot be achieved by the health sector alone; rather its success will depend on the collaboration of all sectors of government (social, economic, etc.)

I felt like just saying the definitions of advocate, mediate and enable wasn’t enough… I don’t think it really answered the question!

During reading time, the questions seemed to easy. However, writing accordingly to the marks was difficult. Agree with most on here, Ottawa and MDG 8 were the most difficult to answer.
There was a large focus on unit 4, and it was disappointing not to see anything on Australia’s healthcare system inc. Medicare, PBS and Private Health Insurance.
Hope everyone did their best

@Harriet and Lana
For one, I’ve never heard of the whole ‘advocate, enable, mediate’ in my life. I have the jacaranda textbook and it doesn’t talk about it, so it’s actually pretty easy not to know what they mean and I think it’s understandable why so many people were stuck when they saw that question. You both obviously have a textbook that focuses on them.
Secondly, “if my mark gets marked down because of all of you” – if anything, you answering the questions right and everyone not means you’ll get marked up?
Anyway, no-one really knows how well they went until the results are out, so might not want to be too sure of yourself.

I was a bit disappointed that I couldn’t apply all of my knowledge as it was so repetitive. It was pretty long compared to last year and the trial exam, I was really pressed for time. The ottawa questions were a bit of a bummer but overall feeling pretty good about it

Hey Guys,
I don’t think many people realise but to get the high 40′s (45-50) you need to be ranked high in your class or cohort. At the end of the Unit, your teacher would collate all your marks and then compare them with others in the class and rank your accordingly. So it is from your rank + how well you do in your exam which ultimately decides how well your study store is in health and other subjects. So when people say “sacs don’t count” Well, yes they do!! Cause they help rank you higher than others in your class. Then obviously you’re then compared to the whole of Victoria with your exam result. Your Sac mark and rank indicates to VCAA where you stand as a student.
This explains how some people (like discussed above) got A+ for GA1 GA2 and GA3 (that is your Unit 3, Unit 4 and then exam result)and only get a 42. Yet others got the same marks, and got a 48. Firstly, the A+ range for health is massive! You can loose 24 marks and still get an A+. So it’s quite deceiving just seeing the letters and not the actual scores. So obviously the person with the 48 may have been ranked higher in their class, and also their A+ for their exam result may have been much higher (e.g. 95/100 as oppose to 78/100 which still constitutes as an A+)
Hope this helps?
Sally | Nov 8, 2011 | Reply
Ok, let’s be honest, that exam was so boring. Normally I dont mind doing health because it’s somewhat related to my life and kind of interesting, but I hated doing this one. I was repeating myself as there was so much on human development and education, i rushed it as it was so long, and I was so angry because it was so unit 4 focused and we wasted so much time learning unit 3 stuff.
My teacher saw us afterwards and even she said it was a bad paper, and she thinks it will get alot of criticism.
So everyone just forget about it, it’s up to vcaa now to realize they were dodgy, and fix our marks and whatnot.

Im pretty sure ottawa charter defines health promotion as ”a process of enabling people to take control over, and improve, their own health”
Don’t know why it was worth two marks though
bee | Nov 8, 2011 | Reply
according to the vcaa website, you only needed 72% last year to get an A+. and i swear the ottawa charter advocacy stuff was not on the study design….
GB | Nov 8, 2011 | Reply
I absolutely studied my hardest for this health exam- a total of 32 practice exams, 4 hours of study each day for the past 5 weeks and even I found this exam the hardest of any of the exams I’ve looked at! They ignored heaps of unit 3 work such as medicare, private health insurance, australian guide to healthy eating… it was actually a joke. And they chose the hardest Millennium development goal possible!! the question about the ottawa charter wasn’t in the study design was it? I totally rushed it and I didn’t finish the last question, but judging by how everyone found it, we should we ranked accordingly so I wouldn’t worry.
By the way what did people write for the question which said identify another determinant of health other than socio-economic status? the question didn’t make sense to me….
Azz | Nov 8, 2011 | Reply
In response to ^, 75/100 woud constitute a B wouldn’t it?
If an A, A+ and A was 40 then what would an A, B+ and B work out to be roughly?

That would be why i’ve allready got a place at uni and a 44 for legal? Anyways there are always ways to get into uni courses so year 12 is about enjoying your last year of school
Paige | Nov 9, 2011 | Reply
People are saying the exam was too long, when its always going to be 100 marks and should be taking you about 100 minutes if timed correctly.
The reason why it took so long is that they included too many questions in Section A requiring 3 or 4 mark explanations which meant a lot of us had to work harder for those marks than the normal 1, 2 mark questions that we can wizz through. And especially because when we see “3″ or “4″ marks, alot of us probably write more than we really need to to cover bases – this also would have led to repetitiveness over in section B.
Thats what I think anyway.
B | Nov 9, 2011 | Reply
Well no my textbook was written by the chief examiner and it didn’t have anything about advocate enable.. whatever it was.
. | Nov 9, 2011 | Reply
last year 73.5/100 was an A+ because the state usually does terribly in the exam overall. but even if you got 73.5 you probably wouldn’t get in the 40s. i thought the exam was really good until it got to that ‘enabling, mediating and advocacy’ question. id seen those words before but our teacher told us that we didn’t need to know what they were. it seems like most people didn’t know what they meant either, so maybe if you get your teachers to write in complaints they might take the question off the exam or be really lenient when they mark them

From reading these comments I’ve felt a bit better that most of you feel the same way. I don’t mind what I get as a score as long as I’ve done my best. Sounds utterly cliché but I find solace in knowing I’ve done all that I can. This exam definitely did not make me feel like that in any way. I studied heaps and made sure I knew the main concepts inside out. Was sad to see such a poor focus on Unit 3. Nutrition, NHPA’s, Healthcare system- Medicare and also studied so much on aid and didn’t have any direct questions on it and I only incorporated it into programs especially the malaria program I used “Sending Nets, Saving lives”.
Found it really repetitive with education and the link with human developement.
Also found some questions a little hard to understand.
I’m not sure if being daunted by the exam was the reason why I couldn’t interpret the question about identifying another determinant of health other than socio-economic status but my head was in a weird place and I found that question hard to interpret.
It’s done though. Good luck to everyone who are still going with exams

The three basic strategies for health promotion of the Ottawa Charter were in my textbook, although they were never stressed as important things to learn.
Advocate: People in positions on power need to take action, such as governments (government’s responsibility and community groups in the health system)
Enable: Enabling people to achieve their fullest health potential by achieving equality (reduce factors that make health care unavailable)
Mediate: intersectorial collobaration (everyone being involved in health)

Why was the exam sooo long? Its unfair! Most years it was 15-16 pages? this year 24 ????? Part A is usually 1-2 mark answers, not the case this year! we had 4 mark questions….Part A took as long as Part B to do which should not be the case! And whats the business with goal 8, the most irrelavent goal, the only one i didnt pay attention to! And since when do goals take 8 points… all connected to only 1 ? usually its just like ‘name a goal…’ its more broad and optional……. poor us,
p.s. the ottawa charter question isnt in my jacaranda book…
overall too many unit 4 questions, however the book is spread out into 250 pgs on unit 3 and 150 on unit 4 so how does that work out?
Hoopefullllllly the a+ mark lowers cause that wos completely different and HARD.
