Further Maths - course outline.

This article has been reproduced with the permission of Access Education and authored by Joe Wilson.

Units 3 and 4 Further Mathematics consists of a Core section that is compulsory as well as the six modules listed below. Your teacher will choose three Modules for your class to study. Therefore three modules exist in your textbook that you will not study.

  1. Number Patterns and applications
  2. Geometry and trigonometry
  3. Graphs and relations
  4. Business related mathematics
  5. Networks and decision making
  6. Matrices

It is an advantage to discover the modules that your class will study as soon as possible. You may wish to contact your school’s mathematics faculty to do this. While doing so, check that you have ordered or purchased the correct textbook and calculator.

VCE Further Maths Course Preparation

As you prepare for the beginning of Term 1 you must consider the significant advantage attached to revising the Unit 1 and 2 concepts that makes up the beginning work.

Throughout next year, your aim should be to build on a solid base of understanding rather than to learn new ideas ‘from scratch’. For example, a skill such as obtaining the linear equation when provided with the coordinates of two points, is fundamental. Your teacher will be unable to dedicate significant time to revisit skills such as this.

Be very familiar with your graphics calculator. You need to understand your calculator’s univariate and bivariate capabilities. This includes entering univariate data into the Stat List editor then accessing one-variable summary statistics. The same applies to bivariate data and accessing two-variable summary statistics

Prior to revising past concepts, you may want to consider your individual learning style. Some students do best when they dedicate significant repetitive practice to a mathematical concept. On the other hand, other students require fewer attempts (less practice) on each concept. Whatever your preferred learning style, it is important that you recognize the purpose in your hard work. When attempting questions, you should remember that you are practicing the ideas with the view of doing well on assessment tasks. You should not feel that completing the set work is a task that you ‘have to do’.

Many students are familiar with the traditional approach of dedicating all of their ‘Mathematics time’ on attempting questions. Don’t underestimate the advantage of reading theory and examples from your textbook and then writing your own summaries. Much can be gained by putting your calculator away and reading with purpose.

Most schools begin with the Core section of the course, and it begins with univariate and bivariate statistics.
