VCE Chemistry Podcast
By Heath McGregor on May 11, 2008 in Podcasts + Video, VCE Chemistry, VCE Exams
With the VCE mid year exams just around the corner what better way to prepare for the exams than tuning into a VCE chemistry podcast. The next VCE help radio session will be happening later this week and once again we need your help.
I will be interviewing Elissa Huddart, a highly experienced VCE Chemistry assessor and lecturer, on how to get prepared for the upcoming VCE Chemistry exam. With the brand new VCE chemistry curriculum many students have a number of questions and concerns about VCE Chem.
In the comments section below write out any question or concern that you may have about Unit 3 VCE Chemistry. A list of topics could be areas like what to expect on the mid-year exam, specific content questions etc. As you read through the other comments/questions before you feel free to comment on the other topics listed before it.
Please enter in your name and email address (used so we can give you the credit) as well as your specific question below. The more questions we can ask, the more quality information we can help you out with. As the interviewer I am led by the questions and comments that you as readers leave on the website (under the comments section). After the interview I will edit the radio content and upload to the website ready for the VCE help community.

What degree of difficulty do you believe will be applied to questions on IR, NMR and Mass-Spectrometry in Exam 1
Do you think that questions on biomolecules will be be similar to some of those found on the biology exams - or significantly different to avoid deliberately avoid overlap?

Which aspects of drug design and chemical pathways should be reviewed before heading in exam 1? Would understanding the pathway of aspirin or paracetamol benefit students?
What should students should be focusing on in the new study design and how should they use the data book which is now introduced?

What exactly will the Mid-year exam have to do with DNA?

I was told that the production of Aspirin would be important as well as the students getting used to using the data book

What kind of questions will be asked on NMR, IR and mass spectroscopy? Since we dont have checkpoint questions on these topics, is it enough if we do questions from the text book used at school? Also, will questions relating to this be relatively easy since we are the first people to do it?

What percentage of questions on the exam will be to do with the new topics (NMR,IR,mass spectroscopy) ?
L.S. | May 16, 2008 | Reply
true and true…theres a very high chance that aspirin will be on the exam…
and the data booklet is pretty big(if you havnt noticed)and you’l only benefit from gettin used to using it-saves time you see…

How much will we have to worry about chemical shift and using the data booklet to determine chemical shift?
Why is chemical shift measured in ppm?
There is a wide range in the chemical shift values stated and some of the values overlap with each other, so how do we know for sure what molecule it is?

Are we expected to know how instruments such as NMR, mass spec and IR work? or just how to interpret infomation (spectrums) about them. And also, what are the chances of this years exam being easier due to the new study design.

What is the area in which mistakes are most commonly made and how can we avoid these mistaktes?

Hi all.
Thanks for all your detailed questions. I have just finished the podcast interview with Elissa and you can expect to listen to the podcast in the next day or so.
For the record Elissa lectures for Access Education - http://www.accesseducation.com.au/midyear.html - who are running a series of VCE chemistry exam preparation sessions. For more information about their exam preparation programs (which include biology, physics, psych, accounting etc) check out their website ASAP.
