Unit 3 VCE biology 2009 podcast – need questions
By Heath McGregor on Mar 29, 2009 in VCE Biology, VCE Resources
Hi all,
The next podcast interview for the VCE help radio program will be with leading biology teacher and fellow podcaster Andrew Douch, who produces some high quality biology podcasts for VCE students.
Later this week (the last week of term – woohoo) I will be recording the interview and as per usual…I need the help of all VCE biology students.
Usually I ask some generic questions about:
- How to best prepare for the Unit 3 course and strategies for leading up to the exam
- Top 3 concepts that students have difficult with and strategies to best learn them
But once again I need your help. If you have specific questions about the VCE biology course or content please write / comment below or (as a new initiative for 2009) we will also accept voicemail questions which can be left by calling 00111 206 984 9736 ( Calls cost usually 50-80 cents from mobile or landline). Please leave your name below as well so I can give you the credit you deserve.
After the interview I will edit the audio content and upload to the website ready for the VCE help community. The more questions we can ask, the more quality information we can help you out with.
Cheers,
Heath

I am a vce biology student this year and I was just wandering will the exam be harder or esaier than the 2008 biology exam. Also what are some techniques or strategies that can be used to memorise information?

Hi Heath, I’m currently studying Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration. Regarding those two seperate phases what kind of questions will we expect to get on the Unit 3 exam on those two reactions.
Will one phase be more prominent than the other?
And how specific do we have to know how the three stages of Cellular respiration “Glycolosis,Krebs cycle, electron transport chain” etc, what kind of questions would we get on this?
thanks

Hi Heath,
As a Biology student, we are currently moving onto topics such as homeostasis and covering cell signalling.
In learning the hard way, I’ve been told to be specific with my answers in SACs – students basically write a whole essay on each question but I was wondering if there were any strategies to pull a part a question and to provide a straightforward answer with all relevant details?
Thanks

For the first chapter in Biology of the Area of study 1 which we have already covered we were expected to understand how different structures of proteins relate to the various functions that it carries out in living organisim.
I was just wondering in regards to this certain topic of how much importance will it be to the upcoming exams and what would be an appropriate answer if asked a question on the exam about the structual and functional diversity of proteins.

Good and bad news – the podcast is finally booked in with Andrew Douch on Monday 20th April (bad that we have to wait so long but good in the sense that you have time to prepare lots of different questions. Keep them coming. For the record Andrew is happy to answer specific questions about the curriculum and the Unit 3 exam based on his experience but he won’t be able to tell you what is on the exam because chances are, he won’t know (and couldn’t tell you even if he did). Nonetheless, please keep the questions coming. This is shaping up to be a great interview.

I’m a y12 Biol student this year, and am really struggling with trying to remember all the details about photosynthesis and respiration.
Do you have any hints about how we can best memorise the details?

The calvin cycle is quite a complicated one so Andrew being such a great vce biology teacher can u explain this cycle in the most simplest form somehow covering all the information that is expected to be understood .

I am having particular difficulty with the stages of photosynthesis. I did not do 1/2 bio so it would be really helpful if it could be explained using plain english (specifically calvin/krebs cycles and electron transport system).
What kind of questions are we likely to get on this?
thanks

Hi, I am a year 12 biology student and I am wondering if the upcoming exam will be harder than the year 11 exam last year? Could you explain signal transduction since I’m not sure about it.
Thanks

Hi David,
The biology podcast has already been recorded and uploaded to here:
http://www.vcehelp.com.au/vce-biology-unit-3-podcast-633/
so your question can’t be answered at this point in time. Maybe one of our readers could add to this…
Regarding the upcoming exam and difficulty Andrew doesn’t write the exam and couldn’t tell you even if he did know! Sorry

OK,HELLO
quick question
if all our cells have self markers, and when a foreign cell enters it triggers a response to be destroyed etc, then why don’t sperm cells get attacked by the immune system when a male ejaculates in a female?

Hi Michael,
The site is constantly being updated – usually 2-4 times per week, depending on content that people contribute and my available time. We are planning on doing several more podcasts this year and biology is quite possibly one of those. More info to come. Thanks for the comment. Cheers, Heath

Hi Heath,
Just wondering, how much of the Calvin Cycle should be learnt, and what should be learnt in order to get a good mark
