Hi all,
So you’ve completed the Unit 3 VCE Chemistry exam for 2011. What did you think of the paper? What was hard? What was easy? How do you think you went?
Let us know your thoughts and comments below (please keep them clean!)…cheers

I thought the MC was hard/time consuming and the short answer was relatively easy except question 4. I think its really hard to judge what the cut off mark for a A+ will be, it really falls on how people did in the MC that was the killer.
For Q8b. as the polypeptide was hydrolysed with 6M HCl would the functional group formed, specifically the amino group, be protonated -NH3+.
the answer to 4b was lower…i got that n my tutor confirmed it!
thats good because i got lower too
a lot of people got “the same” though
so im worried :/
What was 4b actually asking for? The way I understood it, it was wanting to know if it’d be lower, higher or the same if the H2O had been taken out of the precipitate but the same molar mass was used. Was this what it meant? I assumed that and then said lower. I want to see the exam again
those that got the same didnt understand the question…it was basic all it asked was if the experiment was conducted at 100 c instead of 25 c AND all the steps taken in 4A were assumed would it be lower higher or same…and since the mass would be lower….and the mole is directly proportional to mass AND Mr does NOT CHANGE the answer is clearly lower!!!!
mate, do the calculation for yourself, it’s the same, cause the Mr does change cause you’re taking out however many H20 molecules
our chem teacher went said it would be the same too, unless some of the precipitate decomposed in the oven when they heated it
do you guys reckon it was easier or harder than previous years?
the mr does not change for the question clearly stated that we should assume that the calculations done in 4a stand…thus it was as if the student didnt know that the formula of the precipitate had changed…if get your hands on the exam youll c!
i think either answer to 4b can be correct depending on your reasoning. i think it’s implied that the H2O evaporates (100 degrees) so Mr does change, but you can say that the student will get a lower result if they mistakenly use the original Mr. However the question said that they “deliberately” heat to over 100 degrees so i thought they would know to use the new Mr, so if they did they would get the same result as in part a.
NERD RAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
just looked at the exam, it says nothing about doing the same calculations that were done in 4a, sorry mate
i thought the exam was pretty easy but it’ll be difficult to do well if the whole state did well at it…i think i got Q4 right but im not sure…don’t stress everyone, u can’t change the exam now!
….I am screwed.
some1 wanna give prediction for a+ cut off?? i reckon 82%….although i thought it was more difficult than 2009, my teacher reckons it wasnt as hard…n it was definitely harder than last year…
it was pretty hard, i think i passed
NO2 sounds familiar… but im not sure
anyone who wants to see the answers, but not 100% correct because it has been done by a private company.

im really worried about my score but i think i did OK im hoping i got higher than most people. because thats what vce is about, competition.
Yeah whenever I scan things that were done in pencil it doesn’t show up properly
lol i only did multiple choice and the dna queston, i thought it was really hard :/
thought it was a pretty difficult exam. MC wasnt too bad, just the short answer tripped me up a little. my teacher (who is also the school principal) read through it. thought question 4 of short answer was worded badly and had too many other components that could be figured out. but, we still have another unit to work our butts off to boost our score
Connect education have released the full answers now. Like they have done the calculation questions such as Q4 and Q5.
Use Kathy’s link if you can’t find the page.
I needed more t i m e!
I spent so much time on question 4 that I couldn’t do question 5 and that was worth 6-7 marks!
Multiple choice was easy though.
The whole Chem exam could probably be compared to getting assaulted in the anal sphincter.
Chem was far easier than Physics though.
The equivalence point is where the number of moles of titrant and the analyte are equal. If the concentrations are the same then the volumes have to be the same to have an equal amount (moles), BUT the pH will be higher at the equivalence point when the weak acid is used because not all of the acid donates H+ so the concentration of OH- is greater so pH > 7.
Q4b is the same. The key word, as pointed out by someome earlier is DELIBERATELY,therefore we know the molar mass of the precipitate will not have the water. Because the hydrated precipitate and dehydrated precipitate both have the same amount of phosphorous the number of moles does not change.
Abcofvce you seem to be on the ball. That was what i was exactly thinking whilst i was reading the others comments about it being lower. Well done.
I think the exam was of medium difficulty aside from question 4, which I nooooow thiiiiink I got wrong, thanks alot everyone . …..’sobs’… just joking i’m not blaming u guys. That was one scary exam, thank god its over.
They ask you to write in pen because the paper will be cut up and then scanned onto the computer. That’s how they mark it, so if the pencil isn’t dark enough, it won’t scan properly. But it’s not that big of a deal anyway because if there’s something they can’t understand or read, they go back to your original exam.
Hey does anyone have a link to a copy of the actual exam? i cant remember like, half of what the multi choice were , and so i cant tell what i got as an answer…
how did everyone go for the banana oil question?
Overall I thought it was a pretty demanding exam.
Yer I got thirty something for qn four a and lower for four b cox we were sposed to use the same mr
Umm where did u get the exam paper cox I’d like to take a look at it ..thx
How did people go? No-one in my class got more than a B+
lol, 1 person in my class got A+, but the majority averaged from C+ to B+
AHHHHHHH it looks sooo hard and im only still on Unit 1 Chem yr 11 :S
