By Heath McGregor on Jun 12, 2012 in VCE Biology, VCE Exams, VCE Resources
Hi all,
Congratulations on finishing the Unit 3 VCE Biology exam for 2012. What did you think of the paper? What was hard? What was easy? How do you think you went?
Let us know your thoughts and comments below (please keep them clean – all comments are moderated anyway!)…cheers

When we write the diff. between the cytosol and cytoplasm, were we meant to say that the cyoplasm included cytosol and all organelles except nucleus?? Cos I read somewhere that ‘protoplasm’ means including the nucleus>(
@Celine: I don’t understand.. Increasing absorption of calcium from the intestines /would/ increase the blood calcium levels in my opinion. It would be taking it from the intestines I to the blood, thus increasing it. If the result was to rise the calcium in the urine, that would take the calcium it of the blood and into the urine, right?
Lizz,
Passive immunity to rubella virus will not last for 2years therefore babies are immunised against rubella (MMR) around 12months (Q19).Stem of the Q18 says these mothers have been exposed to the virus during pregnancy and babies were tested before breast feeding. If they have IgM it has to be because baby was exposed to the virus during fetal development.Hope this sounds ok.
Question 13 is D because increased absorption of calcium from the intestines would result in more calcium being absorbed into the BLOOD. Theefore increased calcium levels.
Have a look at Connect Education they have the solutions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Everyone just relax.
It was WAAAY different than previous exams!!! At first, it seemed easier, then, as we talked with our teacher about the Qs, i got a LOT wrong…some were trick Qs, others werent properly worded and were misunderstood, and some Qs on certain topics on there that hadnt even been brought up on any of the past exams. :S oh well, i guess we learn through our experiences, that is, learn thr whole course, not just the bits that you know they will/they have asked. :S
that’s what i thought..
Damn i got the triglyceride question wrong!!!
if you guys want to feel better, just watch the latest video on John Cena
Uhmmm for the drawing of the graph,
at 80 degrees, the enzymes in the stomach juice are denatured, SO the amount of polypeptide will be higher as the enzyme could not break down the protein from the meal, denatured therefore highest concentration of polypeptiddes.
at 10 degrees higher than 37 degrees, but lower than 80 because of less collisions between substrate and enzyme.
This question was interesting (: also important note for you all: polypeptide chain is PRIMARY STRUCTURE it is unaffected by denaturisation, sorry guys :/
Because later in the question it said that structure X becomes less efficient as people get older. People have animal cells and no cell wall
Sorry, two careless mistakes in the above answer list.
Q15. B
Q21 B and C?
hey guys, this is going to sound really dumb, but could it be right if i said one difference between the endocrine and nervous system was the release of the chemical component? i did nervous into the synaptic cleft and endocrine into the blood… :s
Ceylon I’d agree with all except Q.15. The independent variable is what you change in the experiment. In this case it is the activity of Jonah so B.
D, the core body temp, is the DEPENDENT variable, being what you measure.
And Q21. really depends on interpretation. What is the original source of energy? ATP gets it’s energy from glucose, but glucose gets it’s energy from sunlight, so I’d say C.
Lizz, re:Q18. If IgM antibodies do not cross the placenta, the only way the baby could have them (specific to rubella) is if the baby had been infected with rubella. So D. Option B is more likely to be only six months of passive immunity from IgG’s that do cross the placenta. They don’t last as long as two years. I guess you got the rest correct!
can someone please post a copy of the exam? and solutions if possible? please?!
@meg
When calcium gets absorbed by bones, a portion of the bone can break down into calcium which gets inserted into blooodd!
Trust me .,..its correct!
wouldnt there be more polypeptide chains because the polypeptide chains are not being broken down?
@Gina the answers that my teacher did are below:
1 – C
2 – A
3 – D
4 – C
5 – C
6 – A
7 – C
8 – D
9 – C
10- B

18-D
19-B
20-C
21-C
22-D
23-B
24-D
25-C
Hope this helps @Gina
the bio exam was easy peasy, the chem exam however….
Question 21 would have been C, when a question talks about the original source of energy it is almost always referring to the sun
3 multiple choice wrong. This is PATHETIC!!!
@andrew wouldn’t there be a lower concentration of polypeptides then? if the enzyme hadnt broken down the protein properly, there would be more protein and less component polypeptides present? so thus, ar 80 degrees the concentration would be lower? *sigh* I’m probably wrong
someone link me to answers! please
i got everysingle question right regarding lipids causeee my body has 99 % lipid composition
@caitlyn “can someone please post a copy of the exam? and solutions if possible? please?!”
NO !
@Yabbay gupta i found the exam super easy.
Are you sure?
did u write that they are lipids? :O
Because Campbell & Reece Biology states that Triglycerides are actually proteins aswell. I feel so bad for you !
Yeah, my uncle is a VCE bio examiner and apparently triglycerides a proteins :S i got it wrong ! DAMIT..im so angry
I’m not sure if you guys are messing with me right now, because I know I’m so right.
“A triglyceride is fat, or lipid, according to Dr. Neil Campbell and his … is more than twice the energy of carbohydrate and protein,”
If there’s one thing I would’ve got right in that entire exam, it would be about lipids!
When do we get the results guys? I dont want to read all he comments nf grt upset so just gonna look at my result before i check out the right answers.
@Caitlyn, yeah triglycerides are definetely proteins contrary to popular belief. It was meant to be a trick question!
yeah everyone got screwed up with this question about the triglyceride
According to Campbell & Reece, “triglycerides are proteins as they are composed up of amino acids”.
Damn, i thought the triglyceride was a bacterial cell!!!
Triglycerides are DEFINITELY lipids! Don’t know who taught you otherwise…
Question 1 on the exam, the only question about triglycerides, is C.
Hey guys, I was wondering if any you knew what the ‘cutoff’ marks for the results this year were, and when the official VCAA solutions to the exam are going to be released?
I got a B. What did people get.
well done with the B. we dont get ours till tomorrow
I got an A. Happy but also slightly disappointed would have liked an A+ grr. Yes what did people estimate the cutoff mark to be?
I got a B+, i am very happy with that as i thought i would be lucky to get a C.I was shocked haha. Hope everyone else got good, and if not its okay still room for improvement for end of year !:)
A+ (Although I honestly thought I’d stuffed it up!) Nice surprise
i got an A+ cutoff mark was 64/75 for A+ i think the grade distrubution is out
I got an A+.
Does anyone know where they can find the cutoff marks?
Or percentage that scored their respective grades and stuff?
I got an A+
Could not be happier!! I think the cutoff mark gets released later this week – or so I’ve heard!
i got an A… hells yeah!
Yeah i got A plus. Thats not bad considering I started studying on the morning before the exam!
Anyone know the marking scheme eg what out of 75 was a A+, A etc etc?
http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/vce/statistics/2012/midyear/vce_biology_ga1_12.pdf
This should answer your questions!
Relieved, I felt the same way, I thought I was going to get a D or something but I somehow got a B. ?:0
Oh Thankyou so, I did not expect it at all because our class finished the course really late and I fell behind, so I had to cram everything in area of study 2 the night before. I gave up in the end. :’ (
GOT AN A!!!!!!!!!! SO HAPPY CONSIDERING I THOUGHT ID GET A C+ …. life is good again! http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/vce/statistics/2012/midyear/vce_biology_ga1_12.pdf
here’s a link to the marking scheme. The A+ cut off was 128 (doubled) so it was 64/75. The A cut off was a 119 (doubled) so about 60/75 or so.. I THINK.. BASED ON THAT WEBSITE FROM VCAA
what I’m questioning is.. why is the A+ for bio lower than the A+ for chem? shouldn’t it be the other way around considering chem is harder?
Hope you guys all exceeded your expectations
