New VCE year and a new opportunity

As we speak we are saying goodbye to 2009 and welcoming the arrival of VCE 2010. Usually around New Years is a time where people have resolutions on how this year will be different than the previous year.

But did you know that 95% of people who set New Years Resolutions don’t follow through?

By choosing New Years Day they are using an artificial stimulus to create change. That is, by using the calendar as their driving mechanism for change they are using an external motivating factor. There is no magical force in the universe that arrives on January 1st every year which helps people create amazing changes in their lives.

We know that the most profound stimulus for change is an intrinsic or internal motivator. Therefore, people who choose New Years as the time to make Resolutions usually lack the intrinsic motivation to make a committed change.

For most people these New Years resolutions are ineffective in changing behaviours because the person has not followed the necessary steps for achievement of their new years resolutions or goals.

Although I have spoken about how to set and achieve your VCE goals previously, in its simplest form the necessary steps for achieving your goals are:

  1. A clear statement of what you want to achieve/perform/complete/get rid of etc. (The “goal”)
  2. A clear series of reasons why that is something you want to achieve. (The “Why to”)
  3. An action plan to achieve the goal. (The “How to”)
  4. Doing step 1, then step 2, then step 3 of the action plan.

So why do most people fail to follow through and achieve their New Year Resolutions?

The top 4 reasons that people don’t achieve their goals are:

  1. The “why to” reason is not great enough for them to finally decide to take action.
  2. They haven’t written down and made a commitment to the goal/s.
  3. They haven’t taken immediate action, followed by consistent action to achieve the goal.
  4. They give up before they start to see results or progression towards their goals.

Which of these reasons have you used in the past?

It is much easier to fail and then make up excuses than it is to succeed.

It is now time to start accepting 100% responsibility for everything that occurs in your life. Your success, or failure, is not the responsibility of anybody else. You cannot blame your teachers, your parents, your upbringing, your friends or any other factor for YOUR future VCE results or any other goal you wish to achieve in life.

Starting right now make a deal with yourself to stop using excuses for your lot in life and if you want to make some changes in your life then just do it.

As a past VCE student and VCE teacher I have witnesses thousands of students go through what you are currently facing.

So what can YOU do about it?

Without question I have found that the students that excel and achieve the best VCE results are those with a system for staying organised and maximising their use of available resources and their strengths.

One of the best ways to get a flying start to your VCE is to attend  Access Educations VCE summer school program. In this program you will get access to lots of quality resources from experienced, informative presenters and I cannot recommend them highly enough. :-)

I’ve also created a small video on how to prepare for your VCE . If you found it useful please leave a comment.

Over the next week you will start to see more resources and articles on the VCE help website as we gear up and get prepared for VCE 2010. VCE seminars, more VCE resources than you can poke a stick at and lots of other exciting initiatives are all coming your way…

Here’s how you can stay tuned of all the latest VCE resources, tips and advice:

1.  Signing up for the ENTER-Life ezine so you can be kept in the loop about the VCE help news.

2. Becoming a Fan of VCE help on Facebook

3. Following us on Twitter

… and remember this website is what you make of it so please post questions, answers and comments to support the VCE help community.

Cheers,

Heath
